  Project Rivers

Project Rivers is a project that has already been started on STEM~Net. Eugene Vaters Collegiate wishes to be part of this project. The project will allow Vaters to take "ownership" of a section of Leary's Brook. This is a portion of the Rennie's Mill water system. Vaters will be responsible for the collection of data about their section of the water system. This data will mostly be scientific but will include, also, historical and other forms of data where appropriate. The data can be anything from water analysis to digitized video. The limitation will be the equipment that Vaters can obtain or borrow from other sources.

  Goals

The goals of the project are broad since we wish to involve as much of the school as possible. It is the aim of Vaters to involve a variety of school subject areas and as many grade levels as possible.
1. Students will learn how to collect scientific data in a real world setting.
2. Students will learn to publish their data using World Wide Web (WWW) as their platform.
3. Students will gain an appreciation for our waterways and the need to keep them clean.

  Resources

1. Internet connection. Provided by Cable Atlantic and STEM~Net.
2. Internet Server to place WWW pages on. This could be the school's server or STEM~Net.
3. Computer Systems capable of running WWW software. This will be provided at the school level.
4. Flatbed Scanner and related software. This will be provided by Vaters Collegiate.
5. Digital Camera. This will likely be purchased by Vaters. STEM~Net has offered their camera for a short period of time (not overnight).

This project meets course objectives in various areas, including Communication Technology, Chemistry, Language Arts, and Biology.
