  Project Overview


The Internet offers an exciting avenue for linking primary students with people who actively LIVE in the places which most of our children know only through their textbook. This project gradually introduces the students to the Internet and e-mail as they search for information from pre-determined, appropriate sites. Once students become familiar with using the Internet, they will be required to save appropriate information about communities, and compile it on charts or checklists. The next aspect of the project involves the students in preparing an interview and e-mailing it to someone from another community.

The following sources may be used to arrange e- mail participants:
  1. Grade three students from other STELLAR schools
  2. Friends and/or relatives of students who have an e-mail address
  3. Personnel employed at Town offices around the province
  4. Contacts made through TIC (Teachers in Cyberspace) at the Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers' Association
As they explore the Internet, prepare, send, receive and share their communications, the students will be enriched as they make many interesting discoveries about communities and people in our province.

Students will know that communities in Newfoundland and Labrador use the natural environment to supply their needs.Through accessing sites with aerial photographs of communities, students will see the natural environments and can read about the land use or request information via e-mail.
Students will locate and gather information, wherever possible, outlining, appraising, summarizing and recordingStudents use classification charts to record specific information they find when they do an Internet search on a community. To complete this activity, it is necessary to appraise the appropriateness of the material they find and then do an oral or written presentation of their overall findings for the class.
Students will know the important needs of a community (food, clothing, shelter, etc.)Students will conduct an e-mail interview with someone from another community in Newfoundland and Labrador regarding how people meet their basic needs.

Use communication tools to access, evaluate and select appropriate information, and to create, modify and disseminate information.Internet sites will be accessed with teacher guidance. Students will evaluate whether the information at the web site is appropriate for their assignment. Suitable material will be saved for use in their presentations.

  Resource Connections


The connection will allow all of the students to view one Internet site simultaneously as they are taught how to do an Internet search. They can collaborate with a partner, or work independently to access one of the pre-selected sites. Once e-mail correspondence is initiated, there will be great demand for a computer; the high-speed connection is vital.

As indicated, students will e-mail people around the province. They may also choose to publish their project on our "School-wide Web" (IntraNet).
Students will record the e-mail or Internet address they use on the interview sheet, chart or checklist they use whenever they access the Internet.
