  Project Overview

The grade six students will develop and solve a series of word problems all pertaining to their school and community. These problems will be curriculum-related. Once developed, contact with another school will be made and these problems will be shared. Both schools will then exchange word problems.

  Curriculum Connections

This project supports the learning outcomes for Mathematics for the province which state that by the end of grade six, students will:
  • show increased confidence and competence 'in developing and solving non-routine mathematical problems.
  • show increased confidence and competence in developing and solving routine (story) problems.
This project also addresses the learning outcomes for Technology Education which state that by the end of grade six, students will:
  • use a variety of communication technologies and tools.
  • collaborate with distant students and teachers on control projects and problems.
  • use communication tools to access, evaluate and select appropriate 'information, and to create, modify and disseminate information.

  Resource Connections

The STELLAR Schools Internet connection will enhance this project by making available the hardware and Internet time necessary to implement such a project.
Other resources being utilized will include any print/non-print materials available 'in the school and in the community. Mount Pearl City Council will certainly be one source of information.


After completion of this project, students will be able to:
  • demonstrate increased confidence and competence in developing and solving mathematical story problems.
  • show increased knowledge on the value and use of the Internet.
