Project 2 - Population Statistics - World Geography 3202
This project will be completed as part of the evaluation for World Geography 3202. One of the chapters deals with population of various countries. Statistics in the book are somewhat outdated and countries included do not serve the purpose for which the course was designed. It is always most appropriate to have current figures. This is not always easy to get. However with the use of the Internet the most up-to-date information is available. The purpose of this project will be to get students to find the most up-to-date population statistics available on a number of developing and developed countries. Using these statistics they will then formulate a population pyramid of these countries and compare the results. By doing this, students should be able to come to some conclusions about population, as well as other conclusions about other ideas related to the countries standard of living. It is a firm belief that students must be made aware of the Internet and how to use it. Many students are frightened by this new technology and an attempt must be made by teachers to overcome these fears. We must make sure that students are armed with all the tools necessary in order to sift through all the information out there. The Internet is just now beginning to fulfill a role in society that will be among the leading methods of information collection for years to come. Therefore students must be made aware that it exists and how to use it. The project will be used to aid students understanding of population patterns in various countries in the World Geography 3202. It may also have some crossover benefits for the Environmental Science 3205 and Global Issues 3205. Students will prepare population pyramids for this project as well as a written synopsis of their findings and conclusions. This will be achieved in a written report being handed in after they have compiled their information. Summaries will be added as they become available.
