  General Information

Lead Teacher:Gerard Cooke
(gcooke@calvin.stemnet.nf.ca)
Grade Level:3 Immersion
Project Start and Finish Dates:February 1997- May 1997

  Project Overview

My grade 3 class will use the Quick-Cam camera, e-mail and other forms of correspondence to communicate in French with other students/classes of their age on the internet. The class will send out a proposal to list-serves and newsgroups asking for interested classes to join in their project. A questionnaire will be developed to ascertain the ability/ suitability of respondents to communicate using a particular medium, i.e. e-mail, Quick-Cam camera, etc.

  Implementation in classroom

Develop letters about specific things in their school/town. For example, the students could talk about the recreation facilities and services provided by the town. They could write about current themes and activities. This would be from a grade 3 perspective (8-9 year olds).

Develop a questionnaire designed to invite participation of other students of their age group. This would serve as an ice-breaker for further exchange of information and ideas.

Create a homepage to post their work; highlight the classroom/school/town.

  Curriculum Connections

The cross-curricular benefits enhance all subject areas; language arts, social studies, math, science, geography and religion. As well, Sacred Heart Elementary School is the only dual track school on the Burin Peninsula. Geographically, it has been extremely difficult for our children to find meaningful opportunities to use their second language even though we are a bilingual country. Solutions to resolving this problem need to be addressed. Past experience in incorporating Internet usage in the classroom has proven its ability to help meet those needs.

  Curriculum Objectives

Students will develop such skills as accessing the internet to research topics, use pertinent software for A/V communication like CU-Seeme and the Connectix Camera, peruse newsgroups, establish keypal relationships and other exchanges, download files and create a homepage for the classroom.

  Resource Connections

Dedicated Internet access for the class will better enable us to pursue and develop exchanges of information on communities and cultures throughout Canada, and the world. The Quick Cam Camera will be utilised to better facilitate and enhance the communication aspect of the project

  Evaluation

The evaluation would be my responsibility. Interviews, questionnaires and formal observations would be conducted by same throughout the life of the project. It is my hope that curriculum development and enriched learning will facilitate in the student, not only improved second language skills, but leadership as well as technological advancement. Evaluation would be:

  1. On-going
  2. After Completion
  3. Comments/Feedback
           - simple form for response.
  4. Summary
           - what worked
           - what to change
           - possible additions/variations
