  Project Overview

Core French students from Grades 5 & 6 will have the opportunity to communicate or be linked to French-speaking schools in Newfoundland & Labrador, (ex. Port au Port Peninsula, French immersion schools in St. John's, Gander or Labrador) or outside of the province (ex St. Pierre, France, Quebec)

Students or groups of students will communicate with a French-speaking pen-pal through e-mail communications.

They will explore similarities by identifying school-related activities common to young French-speaking and English-speaking students, as well as activities they have in common such as favourite games, sports, foods, pets etc.

Stellar schools will easily enable Ralph Laite Academy to twin itself with other Francophone schools for the purpose of exchanging cultural information.

  Curriculum Connections

French:

The ultimate purpose of learning French is to be able to communicate in the language. This stellar school project provides students the opportunity to communicate with other French-speaking students. This will improve their communication skills in French and allow them to learn more about French culture at home and abroad.

  Learning Outcomes

1. Students will become aware of the French-speaking population in Newfoundland and Labrador.
2. Students will be able to communicate with French schools in or outside of Newfoundland through E-mail communications (French pen-pals)
3. Students will gain an understanding of similarities between each other as they explore favourite activities.
4. As students share information with their classmates, they will improve both their oral and written skills in French.

How they relate to Provincial Learning Outcomes:

The above outcomes are tied closely to the Provincial French Curriculum goals which state that students should know:

1. There is a French-speaking population in NF. & Labrador and students should be able to locate the French language schools in this province.
2. French-speaking children play games and like the same thing that English- speaking children like.
3. Life in French-speaking parts of Canada is much like life in English-speaking parts of Canada.

Intended learning outcomes for technology education

1. Students will use communications technologies to build new knowledge from existing information.
2. They will use communications technology as a tool for a variety of purposes.
3. They will be able to identify and clearly state communication problems. They will also identify and present a variety of options to solve the problem.
4. They will demonstrate knowledge of the basic communication principles of encoding/decoding, transmitting/receiving, storing/retrieving.
5. Students, with the help of the stellar school connection, will develop a technology structure whereby information can be easily accessed between other locations and individuals.
6. The new use of technology will expand the French classroom by creating links to other cultures namely French cultures.

  Resource Connections

The Stellar School's Internet connection is vital to the success of our project in order for Grade 5 & 6 French Students to obtain access to other French-speaking students in and outside our province.

This connection is also important in order to allow our students to be actively involved in learning about French culture.

Students will be evaluated on the following:

 proper communication with pen-pals

 oral presentation of information

 written report of information obtained from pen-pals

 oral & written report indicating knowledge of French culture

 awareness of similarities between cultures
