Project Overview
Lewisporte Integrated High School is a Grade 7-12 school that has an existing Computer Lab equipped with a Windows NT
network with 21 Windows 95 workstations. We havejust completes a second computer lab and are presently equipping the room
with personal computers which we hope to have hooked into the networj in the near future. Also the Cable Atlantic Internet
node is locted in our building which gives us fast easy access to the Internet. However, if we are to avil of the enormous
amount of valuable information being made available on the Internet, all teachers and students need to be equipped with
skills to become proficient in the use of the Internet to obtain curriculum related materials. Also, in order for our school
to maintain a "STELLAR SCHOOL" status we have to continue to submit three projects each year. In order for teachers to submit
projects they have to become fully aware of the power and magnitude of the Internet and how it can be used to supplement the
courses they teach.
Curriculum Connections/Learning Outcomes
- The training of teachers and students will take place in three different phases.
- Students enrolled in Computer and Technology courses will receive training in the proper use of the Internet under
the supervision of the lead teachers.
- Teachers will receive training in the proper use of the Internet under the supervision of the lead teachers.
- The remainder of students will receive training in the proper use of the Internet under the supervision of teachers
in curriculum-based courses.
- The benefits of this project will be shared by teachers and students all across the school curriculum. Major areas such
as Social Studies, Language, Science and Computer Technology will experience immediate gains as teachers and students
realize how access to the Internet can be of value in their courses.
- The project is designed to enable the Student and Teacher:
- To use the correct procedure in logging onto a network.
- To demonstrate the correct procedure needed to log onto their account.
- To become familiar with the various search engines needed to locate information on the Internet.
- To acquire a knowledge of how information obtained on the Internet can be downloaded or printed for future use.
- To become familiar with an email package in order to communicate with other people in different parts of the world.
- To develop a positive and responsible attitude to Internet technology and its use in society.
- The project is designed to enable the Teacher:
- To aquire adequate knowledge of the use of the Internet to be able to introduce students through various projects
to the value of the internet.
- To understand that the latest material related to their particular subject/field is right at their fingertips.
- To acquire knowledge in the development and maintenance of homepages.
- The Department of Education endorses the following goals for computer use in the teacher-learning process:
- The primary goal for the application of computers in the schools is the enhancement of student learning.
- The secondary goal is support for teachers in their instructional programs.
- The ultimate goal is to ensure that all students, at graduation, will have skils necessary to function
effectively and confidently in an increasingly complex technological environment.
All of the aforementioned goals will be incorporated into this project which will allow students and teachers to
utilize their computer technology skills in all areas of the curriculum.
Resource Connections
- In order for this project to be undertaken a Stellar Schools Internet connection is vital.
- Other resources that are being utilized are:
- Various kinds of printers and plotters
- Scanners
- Digital Camera
- Video camera
Evaluation
- At the conclusion of the project the Student and Teacher will:
- use the correct procedure in logging onto a network.
- demonstrate the correct procedure needed to log onto their account.
- become familiar with the various search engines needed to locate information on the Internet.
- acquire a knowledge of how information obtained on the Internet can be downloaded or printed for future use.
- become familiar with an email package in order to communicate with other people in different parts of the world.
- develop a positive and responsible attitude to Internet technology and its use in society.
- At the conclusion of the project the Teacher will:
- aquire adequate knowledge of the use of the Internet to be able to introduce students through various projects
to the value of the internet.
- understand that the latest material related to their particular subject/field is right at their fingertips.
- acquire knowledge in the development and maintenance of homepages.
- Evaluation will necessarily be informal rather than formal. The project would be considered successful:
- If students start using the Internet to conduct research for assignments in their courses.
- If teachers start bringing their classes to the computer lab to conduct research or if teachers start assigning
work that can only be completed by using the Internet.
- If teachers start using the Internet to find materials to enhance their teaching in the various courses they teach.
