  Project Overview

Greenwood Academy is a new K-9 school which is presently in the process of upgrading its computer room to a Windows NT network with Windows 95 workstations. On October 24, 1997, Newtel made it possible to access Lewisporte from Campbellton with a local call. This gave us access to the Cable Atlantic Internet node at Lewisporte High School.

Teachers and students at the school need to have some idea of the scope and power of the Internet. They also need to have the skills necessary to take advantage of the tremendous amount of information on the Internet. If Greenwood Academy is to take part in the Stellar School project, the entire population of the school will have to become proficient in the use of the Net.

  Curriculum Connections

• As students and teachers gain experience in the use of the Internet the following areas across the curriculum will see benefit- Computer Technology, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies.
• At the end of this project the participants should be able to use correct procedures to log into the internet, search for information, open web sites, download and save information, and use e-mail. Teachers will also gain knowledge in the development of homepages.
• This project will address the learning outcomes for Technology Education. It will enhance student learning, support teachers in their instructional programs, and enable the students and teachers at our school to function effectively and confidently in an increasingly complex technological environment.

  Resource Connections

This project cannot take place without the Stellar Schools Internet connection. In order for students and teachers to function adequately in this information age an Internet hookup is essential.

This project will use resources that are available in our school's computer lab. Also, the school is hoping to obtain a satellite dish for faster downloading.

  Evaluation

At the end of this project Students and Teachers will:

• use the correct method to log onto the network
• search for information using various search engines
• open web sites using its URL
• download files and save them to a directory
• zip and unzip files
• use e-mail

At the end of the project Teachers will also:

• have knowledge of homepage development
• have understanding of the usefulness of the Internet as a teaching tool

The project's success can be evaluated by the amount of information students and teachers obtain from the Internet. If teachers are encouraging their students to research assignments on the Internet and students are finding information on the Internet, then the project will be a success.
