Project 3: Biology 2201
The main goal of the project is to provide an additional research tool which will enhance the Biology 2201 course. It is hoped that this will encourage students to explore alternative avenues in completing the objectives outlined in the course. Students will be assigned a topic relating to the course, and will be required to locate sites pertaining to this topic using the Internet. These sites will then be evaluated as to their relevance, and if found to contain useful information, will have their Internet addresses recorded for future reference.
In addition to enhancing the Biology course, it will provide the students with relevant experience in researching on the Internet. Many of these students, in meeting the curriculum requirements to pursue their chosen career path, do not have available time to complete any computer related courses. This addition to the Biology program will provide these students with a better understanding of information technology. It will provide them with Internet addresses to topics which have relevant information pertaining to the course, as well as enhancing lab activities.
These is a computer lab available with a terminal for each student in one of the two slots booked for the course. This will provide students with adequate access to the Internet, allowing them to search the web for information pertaining to topics which they are covering in the Biology 2201 course.
Through the duration of this project, students will become familiar with the various aspects of the Internet and will be better equipped to use it as a research tool. It will give them experience using the computer, and provide them with a better general understanding of computers. The outcome of this project will be a list of Internet addresses with relevant information pertaining to topics covered in the course. This accumulated list of sites will be available for other teachers teaching Biology to use to enrich their course.
The aim of the Biology 2201 course is to introduce students to some basic biological principles. It will lay a foundation for further studies in this discipline. Finally it is aimed to spark curiosity and provide students with a basis in skill and content that can lead to life long learning and critical thinking.
Access to the Internet through the STELLAR Schools program will determine the success of this project. Students currently are not provided with access to the Internet, so this project is not possible at this time. If students were provided with access to the Internet, then it would be possible to use class time to allow students to explore the Internet in order to find sites which contain useful information relating to the topics covered in the Biology course.
Students will evaluate the project at the end of the term. They will determine the significance of the project in enhancing Biology through the use of the Internet.
