  Project Overview

Nf has a rich history of folk music. However, this music seems to be a dying art among our school students and needs to be revived.

Grade 5 students study NF culture in their Social Studies classes. The purpose of this project is to learn a repertoire of NF folk songs from rote, study the background of the music and lyrics, as well as to create instrumentation.

Students will communicate with other students in NF, other parts of Canada and in other countries via e-mail/Internet for the purpose of sharing NF folk music and receiving folk music from other cultures.

A result of this project is an increased awareness and knowledge of NF folk music.

  Curriculum Connections

This project will enhance many areas of the curriculum including:

1. Social Studies
   

   * The Grade 5 text book Atlantic Edge is a study of NF culture. This project will further enhance the current curriculum.

2. Language Arts
   

   * Reading

   
   

   * Research Skills

   
   

   * Interpreting

3. Arts and Crafts
   

   * Making NF folk instruments (ie. ugly stick)

4. Music
   

   * Singing and learning about ones own folk music is an important part of music in NF schools.

5. Computer Technology
   

   * Post information to the Internet

   
   

   * Create sound files - wave, MIDI

   
   

   * Communicate folk music with other students in same and different cultures

  Resource Connections

The STELLAR School connection would provide a link between schools and the world wide web both as a means to share our NF folk music with others as well as a tool to research information for this project.

The school is equipped with a networked computer lab. There is also a computer in every classroom (K-6) that is networked to a file server.

Other resources include MIDI and the library.

  Evaluation

• Students will acquire a repertoire of NF folk songs.
• Students will research and summarize information about each song.
• Students will prepare the information in a format suitable for transmission and exchange on the Internet.
