  Project Overview

Students will search the World Wide Web for information about the rainforests of the world. During class time students will conduct their research via the Internet, compile it, and present it to the class. Each group of students will concentrate on a different topic dealing with rainforests. A short but intense time frame of two to three weeks is preferred so that students will become involved with and hopefully concerned about this issue. In this time period it is hoped students will spend from eight to ten periods conducting online research.

This project fits nicely with school goals of increased integration of computers in the curriculum, and an improvement in Language Arts skill.

Provincial Curriculum Objectives:

• Rainforest is a topic in Global Issues 3205. The objectives include the locations and descriptions of various rainforests in the world, the examination of statistics to judge how quickly the rainforest are disappearing and a judgement of how the destruction of these forests affects the world.
• Language 2101 involves writing research papers. The research involved in this project can only help these students learn how the Internet can be used as a research tool.
• Environmental Science 3205 also includes Rainforest as a topic, especially why they are disappearing and the global effect of this

Technology Education Objectives:

• To become familiar with the use of the Internet as a resource.
• To be able to retrieve information from the Internet.

How Stellar Schools will enable and enhance our project:

At this time our school cannot implement this project with the number of students involved, as well we only have 2 computers connected to the Internet. We need more Internet access to accommodate our students so that they can take advance of the resources on the World Wide Web.

Learning Outcomes:

• To enable students to access the most recent information on the rainforest.
• To enable students to understand that we need to help protect rainforest.
• Students will put their findings in a written report and then present it orally to the class.

Impact of this project on the school:

This project will get these students involved, interested in using the Internet as a research tool. It is hoped that these students, other students, as well as teachers, will realize the wealth of information online and become comfortable accessing it.
