Project 3: Archaeological Site
This project will involve creating a web page relating to the National Historic site at Port Aux Choix. It will involve writing an history of the site. We will research how and when the archaeological site was discovered and who made the discovery. We will do a complete history of this site. The purpose of this project would be to create a web page that will inform those browsing the World Wide Web about the Port Aux Choix site and hopefully creating an interest among tourists and Newfoundlanders in visiting the site. We will upload pictures and graphics to our Web Page and also other links to other similar Historic Sites. We will also provide statistics and graphs relating to the number of annual visitors to this site over the years since it has been open. Since in both grade 5 and 6 students study elements of our aboriginal people, this seems to be a good choice of a project to do on the Internet. We envision other areas of Newfoundland and Canada becoming involved in this project as time goes on. The goals of the project would include the following:
The main Curriculum areas addressed by this project are: Social Studies: Researching the history of an archaeological site and learning about an aboriginal people. Some Provincial learning outcomes related to this are: Students should be able to:

The main goal of this project is to develop and information site that will publicize and promote the National Historic Site at Port Aux Choix, therefor the Stellar Schools Internet connection is fundamental to this project. Without the Stellar Schools connection this project doesnt exist. The necessary hardware to connect to the Internet will be provided by our School Board and the local area access to the Zone will provide the means to connect to the Internet. We will need to work with Parks Canada in obtaining permission to publish our work to a web site and also to use as a source of information. We may also be able to use the help of the Provincial Department of Recreation and Tourism in developing our web site. Our digital camera and other computer software such as the availability of Corel WordPerfect Suite and Netscape Composer will enable us to create a first class home page. The learning outcomes and goals mentioned previously will be used to determine the level of achievement and success our students have in this project. Other types of evaluation will involve such things as anecdotal records, grading of specific aspects of writing and observation by the teachers involved.
